BEIJING (AP) - At first, it looks like a sleek Apple store. Sales assistants in blue T-shirts with the company's logo chat to customers. Signs advertising the iPad 2 hang from the white walls. Outside, the famous logo sits next to the words "Apple Store."
And that's the clue it's fake.
China, long known for producing counterfeit consumer gadgets, software and brand name clothing, has reached a new piracy milestone — fake Apple stores.
An American who lives in Kunming in southern Yunnan province said Thursday that she and her husband stumbled on three shops masquerading as bona fide Apple stores in the city a few days ago. She took photos and posted them on her BirdAbroad blog.
The three stores are not among the authorized resellers listed on Apple Inc.'s website. The maker of the iPhone and other hit gadgets has four company stores in China — two in Beijing and two in Shanghai — and various official resellers. Apple's Beijing office declined to comment.
The proliferation of the fake stores underlines the slow progress that China's government is making in countering a culture of a rampant piracy and widespread production of bogus goods that is a major irritant in relations with trading partners.
China's Commerce Minister promised American executives earlier this year that the latest in a string of crackdowns on product piracy would deliver lasting results.
The 27-year-old blogger, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the set-up of the stores was so convincing that the employees themselves seemed to believe they worked for Apple.
"It looked like an Apple store. It had the classic Apple store winding staircase and weird upstairs sitting area. The employees were even wearing those blue T-shirts with the chunky Apple name tags around their necks," she wrote on her blog.
"But some things were just not right: the stairs were poorly made. The walls hadn't been painted properly. Apple never writes 'Apple Store' on its signs — it just puts up the glowing, iconic fruit."
A worker at the fake Apple store on Zhengyi Road in Kunming, which most of the photos of the BirdAbroad blog show, told The Associated Press that they are an "Apple store" before hanging up.
The manager of an authorized reseller in Kunming, who gave only his surname, Zhang, said most customers have no idea the stores are fake.
Some of the staff in the stores "can't even operate computers properly or tell you all the functions of the mobile phone," he said.
"There are more and more of these fake stores in Kunming. Although they may sell real Apple products, some of those products were not imported through legal means. And they cost more."
Fake Apple stores are a "particularly egregious example" of brand piracy but their emergence is not surprising given the amount of product counterfeiting faced by corporations such as Apple, said Ted Dean, president of BDA China Ltd., a telecoms market research company.
He said a challenge for mobile phone companies and others selling branded products across a country as big as China is how to manage distribution, especially to smaller cities.
"And then, making sure people aren't copying it, faking it ... is absolutely a challenge," said Dean, who once saw a fake Apple phone in China that had an Apple logo — but with no bite taken out of it.
Apple said this week that China was "very key" to its record earnings and revenue in the quarter that ended in June.
Revenue was up more than 600 percent from a year earlier to $3.8 billion in the area comprising China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, said Apple's Chief Operating Officer Timothy Cook, according to a transcript of a conference call on Tuesday.
"I firmly believe that we're just scratching the surface right now. I think there is an incredible opportunity for Apple there," Cook said.
The company plans to open two more Apple stores in greater China — one in Shanghai and another in Hong Kong — by the end of the year.

It is exciting to see that this application is finally available after much anticipation. Android users have had an application from the start but other mobile OS users had the mobile web version only (which lacked many features). But what we found most alarming was - there's no support for the iPad or iPod touch. Not even iPad support with the 2x flavor.
Here is the startup screen on an iPhone.
It is unclear why they would leave the two devices out right off the bat. It's understandable if Google is deciding to make a separate Google+ application just for the iPad, but why not allow the 2x option until then?

UPDATED: For those running the iOS 5 beta, it is likely you will not be able to view your Stream using the Google+ application. After tapping the Stream Button, it promptly crashes the application.

CUPERTINO, California—July 19, 2011—Apple® yesterday announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 third quarter ended June 25, 2011. The Company posted record quarterly revenue of $28.57 billion and record quarterly net profit of $7.31 billion, or $7.79 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $15.70 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.25 billion, or $3.51 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.7 percent compared to 39.1 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 62 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

The Company sold 20.34 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 142 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, a 183 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 3.95 million Macs during the quarter, a 14 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 7.54 million iPods, a 20 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter.

> Just curious - why would I want to Jailbreak my ipad?
Jailbreaking provides options or choices for an idevice user. As far
as complications, I have seen people have complications with both a
stock iPad and Jailbroken iPad. Education is what make either
People think because Apple don't allow it, it must be bad or
complicated. There are many tweaks that make a lot of sense and make
using the iPad much simpler. Yes, you could do without them, well just
as you could do without the iPad itself - but why would you? Heck,
Apple gets most of its bright ideas right from an Jailbreak tweak or
Some choose to add OS tweaks like the ability to lock individual apps
with a password so prying eyes don't venture into them with
"Locktopus". Or use "IncarcerApp" to keep a child or someone trapped
in a game, movie or photo album so they can't venture out with the
home button. They might use "Sbsettings" to provide quick and easy
access to Bluetooth, wifi, brightness and other settings without
leaving an app. Others may use "DisplayOut" to display everything
they have on the screen to a PC's monitor or big screen TV. Maybe use
"DisplayRecorder" to record everything they do on the iPad to share
with others or for training. Use "Multifl0w" to show all open apps as
cards instead of a list icons that may or may not be actually running.
Use "Infiniboard" so that there app home screens scroll up and down in
addition to left and right, so that their games can literally be on
one page. Use "MultiIconMover" so they can move many apps from home
screen with easy and without frustration. Use "Tabs+" so they can have
more than 9 open tabs in Safari.
There are Jaibreak apps like "Poof" that makes apps not appear in the
list of apps at all, because locking someone out is different from not
letting them see that it exists. Let's say that you have an Alcohol
Anonymous (AA) app or Kamasulta (sex position) app, should anyone that
views your photos and then hit the home button have to know this too?
"MXTube" let's me download YouTube video while I am at home on Wifi
and let me watch then later when I have no Internet connection.
"iFile" let's me download and manage files on my iPad. Some people use
"Installous" so that they can try all the note-taking apps from the
App Store for free before deciding which one they want to buy. Others
use "Winterboard" because they feel it is their God given right to
customize their computers so that it is a reflection of their
personally and not a mere cookie cutter theme that looks like every
other iPad in the wild.
These are just a few of the many options that are available to
Jaillbreakers. To Jailbreak you simply go to

have access to the above tweaks, apps and more.
To un-Jailbreak an iPad, you simply restore in iTunes and it is back to normal.

Apple's App Store has passed more than 15 billion downloads, according to the company. Currently, the online storefront holds some 425,000 applications, including 100,000 native iPad applications.
Apple also claims some 200 million devices are running iOS, its mobile operating system.
That represents a considerable bar for rivals such as Hewlett-Packard and Google, which also offer application storefronts. Of those competitors, Android Market perhaps comes closest to matching Apple's capacity, with hundreds of thousands of applications available for mobile devices running Google Android. However, the number of applications for Apple's iPad greatly exceeds those optimized specifically for Android tablets.
With its soon-to-be-released Mac OS X "Lion," Apple will include a baked-in Mac App Store with access to a variety of full-screen applications for the company's laptops and desktops. It is a spiritual descendent of the App Store for iOS devices, and perhaps one of the biggest examples of how Apple's advances in mobile-device software are beginning to influence its entire product line.
Apple's upcoming iOS 5 will offer a host of improvements, many of them seemingly designed as a response to competitors such as Google Android and Research In Motion's BlackBerry franchise. Certainly the "iMessenger" conversation platform is an answer to RIM's BlackBerry Messenger. Of greater importance to some users may be Apple's iCloud service, due to ship this fall, and which will sync content and push it to various devices via the cloud. It is integrated with applications, ensuring automatic updates.
During a June 6 presentation to unveil iOS 5, iCloud and Mac OS X Lion, Apple executives claimed the company had sold more than 200 million iOS devices and occupied some 44 percent of the mobile operating system market.
For the three-month period between the end of February and the end of May, comScore estimated Apple's share of the U.S. smartphone market rose from 25.2 percent to 26.6 percent. During the same period, adoption of Google's Android platform rose from 33 percent to 38.1 percent, Microsoft dipped from 7.7 percent to 5.8 percent, and Research In Motion slid from 28.9 percent to 24.7 percent. Those percentages do not include tablets, though, and thus don’t represent the totality of iOS' market effect.
Current rumors suggest the iPhone 5, Apple's next-generation smartphone, could launch sometime this fall. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty recently stated in a note to investors that the next iPhone "will begin production in mid to late August and ramp aggressively." Her information apparently came from talks with unnamed sources in Taiwan. Bloomberg also reported June 21 that the next iPhone would debut in September and include the company's faster A5 processor, along with an 8-megapixel camera.
It goes almost without saying that the device, whenever it's finally released, will have a lot of applications available for downloading.

TSA Agent Caught With Passenger's iPad in His Pants; Allegedly Took $50,000 in Other Goods, Cops Say
The Broward Sheriff's Office says 30-year-old Nelson Santiago stole around $50,000 worth of electronics over the past six months from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport's Terminal.
Santiago -- a TSA officer since 2009 -- was caught earlier this week by a Continental Airlines employee taking an iPad out of someone's luggage and stuffing it into his pants, the cops say.
After being arrested Monday on two counts of grand theft, police say Santiago admitted to stealing computers, GPS devices, video cameras, and other electronic merchandise from luggage he was supposed to be screening.
The cops say Santiago would immediately take pictures of his new goods and upload the photos online to sell the stuff.
Santiago would typically sell the stolen goods to people before his shift was even over, police say.
BSO detectives estimate that Santiago's haul totaled $50,000 over the past six months.
The cops are looking for people whose stuff has been stolen, although they say the chances of getting the stuff back are slim.
Santiago was released from jail on bond, although police say more charges against him are pending.
According to police, Santiago no longer works with the TSA.

If you happen to have a jailbroken iPad, the app isn’t going to do you much good because, as Engadget notes, Time Warner is blocking anyone who jailbreaks their iPad from using the app.
This is, of course, ridiculous. What is the point? How does a Jailbroken iPad threaten Time Warner, their app or their content? What a silly decision!
And the options are minimal. Either you can a) restore your iPad to its factory settings, or you can b) get your TV from somewhere else.

The original story iDB heard was that a trusted beta tester leaked the files. That would have meant Comex was betrayed by someone he trusted, adding insult to injury. We have since learned that this is not what actually happened. Here’s the real story behind the iPad 2 jailbreak leak…
20 year-old Ryan Lobbins is a computer science major from Arizona. Lobbins took to his blog yesterday to clear the air regarding his part in the leak of Comex’s exploit.
“Am I responsible for the leak? Indirectly, yes. Did I leak it intentionally? Not really, I only intended for 1 or 2 people to try the files to see if they worked. The person who leaked it was Will Sayer, and him only. He released the files, sent off the info to news sites not me.”
As it turns out, Lobbins isn’t a beta tester and never said that he was. The entire story seems to have been cooked up by the same person who posted the original links to the unfinished jailbreak.
“I was playing Star Craft with some friends reading Comex’s Twitter updates like every other person waiting for the jailbreak. This is when I had a crazy idea just to search a site he posted in a previous tweet.”
During his search, Lobbins came across Comex’s bannerbomb exploit for the Nintendo Wii which led him to believe this was Comex’s site. As he continued to pour through the directories, he came across a folder named saffron that grabbed his attention. Low and behold, it was Comex’s new JailbreakMe.
“So what would you do if you stumbled on a website that had all the data for the jailbreak people have been waiting months for? At first I wasn’t sure what to do, let alone believe I found the files. The only true indication that I found them was all the pdf files, deb files named after different iOS devices, and a php file.”
When Lobbins went to try the jailbreak on his iPad, it didn’t work. So the computer science major made copies of the files to try on other devices. He then uploaded the files to his personal site before going on vacation.
The night of July 1st, while on holiday, Ryan’s curiosity got the better of him. Here he had Comex’s new jailbreak software, which didn’t work on his iPad. He wondered if it worked at all. He got in touch with someone he had met through an iDevice forum named MultimediaWill, and sent him a link to one of the uploaded PDF files.
To his surprise, it worked. It quickly jailbroke his iPad and installed the all-too-familiar Cydia icon. According to Lobbins, Will swore up and down he wouldn’t leak the files. But judging by the mayhem that ensued yesterday morning, he was lying.
So there you have it, that’s how the infamous iPad 2 jailbreak leak unfolded. By now, most of the links to the leaked files have been removed, and the community is still holding vigilant for the real iPad 2 jailbreak.
