JailbreakMe's Comex goes to work for Apple

Nicholas Allegra, aka Comex, aka the young man behind, has been offered an internship with Apple, according to his recent Twitter update. "It's been really, really fun, but it's also been a while and I've been getting bored. So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple." has been around for awhile, and it's long been one of the easier methods of jailbreaking iOS devices. Over the years the site has gone through various iterations to get around Apple's attempts to plug the holes it exploited, but now it appears Apple has employed the greatest jailbreaking deterrence it can: a job offer.

“It feels like editing an English paper,” Allegra says simply, his voice croaking as if he just woke up, though we’re speaking at 9:30 pm. “You just go through and look for errors. I don’t know why I seem to be so effective at it.”

To the public, Allegra has been known only by the hacker handle Comex, and keeps a low profile. (He agreed to speak after Forbes‘ poking around Twitter, Facebook and the Brown Directory revealed his name.) But in what’s becoming almost an annual summer tradition, the pseudonymous hacker has twice released a piece of code called JailBreakMe that allows millions of users to strip away in seconds the ultra-strict security measures Apple has placed on its iPhones and iPads, devices that account for more than half the company’s $100 billion in revenues.

Steve Jobs Biography to Include Resignation Details, November Debut On Schedule reports that Steve Jobs' authorized biography, initially slated for a March 2012 release but recently bumped up to a November 21st debut, will be updated to include details on his resignation as Apple CEO yesterday. The changes will not result in a delay for the book's release.

Publisher Simon & Schuster said the highly anticipated tell-all biography, written by acclaimed biographer Walter Isaacson, will include Wednesday night's announcement from Jobs' point of view.

Simon & Schuster spokeswoman Tracey Guest told PCMag that Isaacson "speaks to Jobs regularly and is still working on the final chapter of the book."

The biography, simply titled "Steve Jobs", is the first authorized look at Steve Jobs' life. It is being written by former Time managing editor Walter Isaacson and is based on over 40 interviews with Jobs and additional interviews with over 100 colleagues, friends, and family members. Jobs has offered his complete cooperation with the effort, making no subject off-limits and not requesting the right to review material before publication.

Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO From Apple

Apple has just announced that Steve Jobs is resigning as CEO. Apple has published a letter from Steve Jobs to the Board of Directors and the Apple Community as follows:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.


Tim Cook, previously Apple's Chief Operating Officer has been named the company's new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately.

"Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's Board. "Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

"The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO," added Levinson. "Tim's 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does."

Jobs submitted his resignation to the Board today and strongly recommended that the Board implement its succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO.

The news was announced after regular trading hours, and after hours trading was halted for a period during the announcement. Apple stock had closed Wednesday at $376.18 per share, and was last seen down about 5% in after hours trading.

WSJ reports that Sprint will get iPhone 5 in Fall 2011


Sprint Nextel Corp. will begin selling the new version of the Apple iPhone in mid-October, people familiar with the matter said, filling a huge hole in the No. 3 U.S. carrier's lineup and giving Apple Inc. another sales channel for its popular gadget.

The timing, however, indicates Apple's new iPhone, which is expected to be called iPhone 5, will hit the market later than expected and too late to contribute to sales in Apple's fiscal fourth quarter, which ends in September. Most observers had expected the device to arrive next month.

The deal could help prop up the nation's third-largest carrier and give AT&T Inc. more ammunition in its attempt to win regulatory approval for its proposed acquisition of No. 4 U.S. carrier T-Mobile USA Inc.

Verizon Wireless and AT&T, the two largest wireless carriers, measured by subscribers, will begin selling the phone in mid-October as well, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Sprint had more than 52 million subscribers at the end of the second quarter, compared with 106 million for Verizon and nearly 99 million for AT&T.

Sprint will begin selling the iPhone 5 in mid-October, closing a huge hole in the No. 3 U.S. carrier's lineup and giving Apple another channel for selling its popular phone. Spencer Ante has details on The News Hub.

Landing the iPhone is a big win for Sprint, whose results have suffered without being able to sell the trend-setting device. AT&T has relied on versions of the Apple device to drive sales since 2007. This February, Verizon Wireless began selling the iPhone 4. Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC.

In the second quarter, Sprint blamed a decline in its contract subscribers on more pronounced "competitive headwinds," most prominently, "the first full quarter both major competitors offered the iPhone."

Sprint will also carry the iPhone 4, starting at the same time, one person familiar with the situation said.

Richard Doherty, director of the research firm Envisioneering Group, said that the addition of the iPhone would help Sprint retain many of its customers itching to upgrade. The iPhone will also increase foot traffic in Sprint stores, which should help the company to sell high-margin iPhone accessories. "Sprint needs it," said Mr. Doherty. "There are a lot of families that will embrace the iPhone."

That said, the deal could also hurt Sprint by helping AT&T improve its chances of winning approval from regulators for its $39 billion purchase of T-Mobile USA, said Marc Ostrau, a partner and co-chair of the antitrust and unfair competition group at law firm Fenwick & West.

"It not only is likely to give Sprint a boost but also puts more focus on the increasing importance of device suppliers relative to carriers," said Mr. Ostrau.

Herbert Hovenkamp, a professor of law at the University of Iowa, said a Sprint iPhone would probably help AT&T's efforts, but he said the impact depends on how much regulators determine the deal curbs AT&T's ability to raise prices without losing too many sales.

"The question is how much more competition do you get when you have two rivals rather than one," said Mr. Hovenkamp.

The cellphone business is increasingly driven by hot smartphones, which are growing more sophisticated and expensive. Apple commanded an average of more than $650 apiece for its iPhones last quarter. Carriers subsidize the difference between that cost and the phone's $199 or $299 retail price, hoping to make up the difference with the data plans they sell over the course of two-year contracts customers must sign to get the subsidy.

Apple created additional leverage for itself by signing exclusive deals when it first launched the iPhone in 2007. In recent years, the company has changed strategy, inking deals with multiple carriers in countries around the world.

The new iPhone is expected to be similar to the current iPhone 4, but thinner and lighter with an improved digital camera and a new more sophisticated operating system.

Apple said in June that a new version of its mobile operating system would be available this fall, leading many analysts to conclude that an upgraded iPhone would be introduced at the same time.

On a July earnings conference call, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company's September quarter would be affected by "a future product transition that we are not going to talk about today," increasing anticipation.

While Apple unveiled the iPhone 4 at its June developers' conference last year, its successor wasn't ready in time for this year, according to a person briefed on Apple's product plans. The company then aimed to launch a new iPhone by the end of September, though two people familiar with the situation previously told The Wall Street Journal that the phone could be delayed again if its contract manufacturer couldn't improve its production yield rate.

Sprint, fighting to turn itself around after its disastrous merger with Nextel last decade, has managed to stem subscriber defections and improve customer service. But it has disappointed investors by failing to add new subscribers more quickly, in part because it competes with rivals that carry Apple's fast-selling phone.

Verizon Wireless, which cracked AT&T's exclusive U.S. hold on the iPhone this year, has sold 4.5 million of the Apple devices in the first half of 2011.

AT&T, which is also able to sell a cheaper prior version of the iPhone, has sold 7.2 million this year.

Freed-Hardeman University to Introduce Apple ipads, Inkling Digital Textbooks and Faculty Training as Part of Innovative iKnow 2.0

“For the first time since kindergarten, I will have to learn how to go to class again.” That is what Freed-Hardeman University prospective student Katie Scott said when she was told about iKnow 2.0, the initiative created by the university to shift the paradigm of traditional instruction at FHU. Beginning in the fall of 2012, iKnow 2.0 will provide an iPad to every student who enrolls as a freshman at Freed-Hardeman University as well as every faculty member at the institution.

“We want our faculty, our staff, our university, to be at the forefront of technology,” said Mark Scott, vice president of technology and innovation “This program will continue to allow for that, while creating an atmosphere of shared knowledge and a higher education experience unlike any other.”

iKnow 2.0 will provide an iPad to all freshmen beginning with the Fall 2012 cohort. In addition, FHU will establish minimum MacBook requirements for incoming freshmen. It is anticipated that continuing and transfer students will be provided an opportunity to opt in to the iKnow 2.0 program and receive an iPad for a one-time fee that is basically equivalent to the cost of the iPad.

The most exciting part of the program will be the ability to access textbooks via the iPad. Historically, students go to the university bookstore and spend hundreds of dollars per semester on books. Now, because of the iPad, students will have access to interactive digital textbooks that are not only more participatory, but significantly more affordable.

“We are not the most popular people with the bookstore staff right now,” said Mark Scott jokingly. “But they understand, as we do, that this is the future and we have to continue to progress, if we want to continue to provide the best Christian education possible.”

FHU has partnered with Inkling, a company working with publishers to provide enriched, interactive, and engaging content, on the iPad. Their goal, along with FHU, is not to reinvent the textbook or reinvent publishing, but to reinvent the way people learn on the campus of Freed-Hardeman University.

"When I visited the campus and met the team at FHU, it was clear to me that we had a forward-thinking technology partner to work with," said Matt MacInnis, founder and CEO of Inkling. "We're thrilled to be a part of the university's technology revolution."

“Once we saw a demo of Inkling, it was obvious how limited traditional textbooks had become and how limitless the digital textbooks seemed on the iPad. That is very exciting for us,” said Mark Scott.

“Our books will no longer look like they used to,” said Katie Scott. “They will all be in one tablet, where we can write in them, make notes, see real videos, 3D models, and we get to keep them forever; it is going to be awesome.”

Additionally, the iPad will be provided to the faculty of Freed-Hardeman. They also recognize the importance of moving forward.

“Make no mistake, this is an academic initiative,” said Dr. C. J. Vires, vice president of academics at Freed-Hardeman. “Academically, we are positioned well to move in this direction thanks to the myriad of faculty who have participated in several pilot projects and are already effectively using the iPad as an instructional tool within the classroom. In addition, our Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) has been working diligently to identify and disseminate information and training related to the iPad. To further facilitate this transition academically, we are working on a strategy to provide iPads during the Spring 2012 semester to those full-time teaching faculty who do not already have one. Through the help of our advancement team, the university is raising funds to make this happen. Also, CIT will host a number of events to highlight various instructional tools and strategies associated with the iPad. Finally, we will continue to work with companies like Inkling to identify digital textbooks that provide the richest content and dynamic experiences for our students. Through all of these efforts, students at FHU in the fall of 2012 will become more actively involved in the dynamic co-presentation and co-creation of classroom content and experiences. As a result, student learning will increase and our graduates will be better prepared for the adaptive and evolving work environment they will enter upon graduation.”

Faculty at FHU believe that will be the case, if they can get the iPad to the classroom.

“My five-year-old daughter found some of the apps I downloaded for our science faculty,” said Dr. LeAnn Self-Davis, dean of the School of Sciences and Mathematics. “She already knows how to dissect a frog.”

Self-Davis said that when FHU conducted the iPad pilot study that the tablet seemed to be less intrusive than a laptop and definitely more interactive.

“The students make more eye contact and seem to focus more than they did with a laptop in front of them. Because the iPad is limited to one application at a time, social media, the Internet and other things that can work their way into the classroom through technology did not distract students. The iPad eliminated that,” said Davis

The iPad does have its challenges, however. Changing the way professors have taught for years, some of them for more than 30 years, is definitely a challenge according to campus information technology specialist Patrick Bolton.

“Although we have made great strides over the past several years, we have a few instructors who have yet to embrace new technology,“ said Bolton. “We have to find a way to integrate what they have done for years, what they are comfortable with, into this new technology.” According to Boltin, one way this can be accomplished is by using the iPad in conjunction with a MacBook as a mobile digital white board. Using the software Doceri, allows one to wirelessly control their computer and annotate on Powerpoints and PDF documents.

Many of the professors are surprised when they see the ease and capability of the iPad. Lisa Beene, chairperson of the behavioral sciences department, said she was nervous about receiving the iPad, but then impressed.

“Technology scared me at first,” said Beene. “But after meeting with our CIT staff and learning the capabilities of the iPad, I am going to do everything I can to make this part of my everyday teaching activities.”

“This is an enormous undertaking for the university and we know there will be challenges and possibly criticism,” said Mark Scott. “But, we have a responsibility to the students to prepare them for employment and to our faculty to help them with that preparation in the best way available. We believe this program to be one of the most progressive in the nation. Our vision is to lead the way in higher education innovation. We plan to continue to build upon the momentum created by our innovation. iKnow 2.0 will not only move toward a greater focus on mobile learning and technology, it will simply make the traditional classroom a thing of the past. We expect to enhance instruction and improve student-learning outcomes with our innovation. This program will allow us to continue that journey toward effective, relevant, and transparent use of technology in learning,” Mark Scott said.

In 2008, Freed-Hardeman pioneered integrating technology in the classroom with the iKnow initiative. With the development of mobile technology and the fusion of academics, highly trained faculty and the best students in the Southeast, FHU was repeatedly recognized as the leading technological university within the region and in the Southeast.

Cydia Package isslfix Fixes SSL Vulnerability For iOS < 4.3.5

With the release of JailbreakMe 3.0 and Apple's response, iOS has been updated twice in order to patch the JailbreakMe exploit and other vulnerabilities. Updating to iOS 4.3.4 is not recommended as it only fixes the PDF exploit that JailbreakMe used and addressed with the free PDF Patcher 2 download available in Cydia. From there, Apple once again released a new version, 4.3.5, to patch other issues that were found. Although redsn0w is now able to jailbreak both 4.3.4 and 4.3.5, it is also not recommended for iPad 2 owners as you will have to deal with a tethered jailbreak.

Now: In Apple's current releases, there were things that were patched that were actually "legitimate" fixes (not in response to JailbreakMe 3.0). The problem is, if you're sticking jailbroken, you aren't able to get this security updates without having to upgrade and lose an untethered jailbreak. This issue has now been solved by jan0 (@0naj) who recently released a package called "isslfix" on Cydia.

In the most basic terms, isslfix patches an SSL vulnerability known as CVE-2011-0228 without having to upgrade to the latest firmwares. All you simply need to do is install isslfix from Cydia and you will have the same protection that the later iOS firmwares offer.

  • Kickstarter is a breeding Ground for iOS Accessories

    Where do you look for iPhone and iPad accessories? Your local Brookstone, Best Buy, the Apple Store or maybe even Kohl's There are lots of places to look, but one destination has become my go-to spot for accessory browsing: Kickstarter.

    The Amazon owned, crowd-funding site, which invites users to invest in various projects with small sum “pledges” that only have to be paid if a project reaches its funding goal, is a breath of fresh air for iDevice accessory shoppers like myself. Kickstarter projects associated with Apple hardware seem to be doing very well, both on the site and after achieving funding. Kickstarter is a breeding ground for not only iOS accessories, but for iOS software as well. One if the most understated advantages of the iOS devices has always been the that they have tons of accessories available them. Compare this to other devices that barely have cases or accessories available at all. Kickstarter has made the innovations of those, whom would normally not be able to bring their ideas to life, a place to not only introduce those ideas but to bring them to market.

    Here’s a look at some of the best iPhone, iPod and iPad-related projects Kickstarter has brought us so far.

    1. TikTok + LunaTik

    Apple’s iPod line has been overshadowed by the iPhone and iPad for quite some time now, but that didn’t stop the bite-sized music player it unveiled last fall from sparking the imaginations of many an accessory maker. Designer Scott Wilson was one of those who saw great potential in the 2010 iPod nano, and he came up with something that fits seamlessly with Apple’s own minimalist sensibilities.

    Wilson created the TikTok and LunaTik, two watchband accessories for the iPod nano, based on the idea that users would be willing to pay more for a quality product, instead of just spending only a little bit of money on the nano straps rushed out the door by the usual suspects. The TikTok and LunaTike proved he was right, raising nearly $1 million on Kickstarter, before eventually finding a place on Apple Store retail shelves. The TikTok retails for $39.95, and the LunaTik is $79.95

    2. Glif

    iPhone photography is not a new phenomenon, but it seems to be taking off as the quality of the device’s camera improves. But for all their enthusiasm, mobile photo buffs still run into the limitations inherent in using a smartphone camera. Stability and shooting in low-light situations definitely number among those weaknesses. The Glif, designed by Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt, aimed to fix some of the problems with iPhone photography in a simple way.

    The Glif is a single piece of hard rubber with a metal threaded tripod mount that snugly grips your iPhone 4. It works wonderfully, as I discovered, letting you use your iPhone with any standard tripod, and other useful photo accessories like the Joby GorillaPod. The Glif might have been possible without Kickstarter, Glif designer Provost says, but the site “does so much more than just money raising.” According to Provost, it also “creates and fosters an enthusiastic community around your product, which is invaluable.” The Glif retails for $20.00.

    3. GoPano micro

    Another project related to iPhone photography (they aren’t exactly a rarity), the GoPano micro also achieved Kickstarter success. It’s a case/attachment combo that allows the iPhone 4 to record 360-degree videos, which you can then upload and share to the GoPano website.

    This relatively small and inexpensive add-on for the iPhone is a classic Kickstart project: a product that appeals to such a relatively small niche of customers that it probably wouldn’t otherwise get made. But for realtors, nature lovers and others who might benefit from the tech, it’s an amazing device at a great price, and judging by the GoPano micro’s nearly $170,000 in funding, many agree. The GoPano micro will retail for around $80 when it becomes available.

    4. PadPivot

    Holding the iPad for longer periods of time can be a bit of a challenge. Designer Bernie Graham recognized that, and created the PadPivot, which features a ball-and-socket design, combined with a contoured base to make it easier to perch your iPad on your thigh at an easy angle for viewing. In my review, I couldn’t really find anything bad to say about the finished product.

    Graham says that while he likely could’ve made the PadPivot a reality without Kickstarter, the site streamlines things and really allows entrepreneurs to focus on the process. And having watched along as the PadPivot made its way through funding, to production, to being retail-ready, you really see the advantage of Kickstarter from a small manufacturer’s perspective, as well as the challenges that ramping up to full-scale production present. The PadPivot will retail for around $25 when it becomes available.

    5. The Cosmonaut

    Dan Provost and Tom Gerhardt had so much fun creating the Glif on Kickstarter that they went back for seconds. The Cosmonaut, another project to break $100,000 in funding, is an iPad stylus designed based on how users actually draw on their iPads. The project was unusual in that it started out with a risky “pay what you wish” option, where every backer who pledged at least $1 would receive a pre-order of the finished product.

    Luckily, the gambit seems to have worked out in Provost and Gerhardt’s favor, as you can tell by the success of the initial funding. It also reflects well on the Kickstarter community that it rewards smart design, even when given leeway to take advantage. The Cosmonaut will retail for $25 when it becomes available.

    6. The Oona

    Looking for a flexible iPhone mount that can stick to a variety of surfaces? The Oona can do that, and more. It works as an in-car windshield mount, a desk stand, a tripod attachment and even an under-the-cupboard clip for browsing recipes. Like the other projects listed here, it’s also stylish, showing off considerable design talent from the team of Brad Leong, Danny Fukuba and Sam Gordon.

    The Oona managed to exceed its funding goal by more than $120,000, and is now accepting pre-orders with a four- to eight-week lead time. The Oona retails for $25.00 now in pre-orders, and $29.95 once it becomes widely available.

    7. MySaver

    The last project on this list, Thomas Lehman’s MySaver, has yet to be fully funded. But the problem it addresses is so widespread that I have faith it’ll exceed its goal. The MySaver addresses the tendency of iPhone, iPod and iPad cables to wear out near the points where they connect to the USB or dock connector ends. This has eventually happened to nearly all of my iPhone USB cables.

    The MySaver comes in two flavors: a DIY version for upgrading your own cables at home, and a Pro version that comes pre-assembled with a high-quality OEM dock connector to USB cable of its own. The project is a smart idea, solves a common problem, and something we haven’t yet seen from the usual crowd of established accessory makers. The MySaver can be pre-ordered with a $8 Kickstarter pledge for the DIY version, or a $19 pledge for the Pro version.

    That’s just a sampling of some of the best and brightest Kickstarter has to offer. There are tons there; just search for iPad or iPhone once you visit and enjoy the options available.   • Skype releases free iPad app

    On Tuesday, Skype released an iPad-optimized version of its popular Internet-phone and video-chat app, and judging by early consumer reviews on iTunes – there are already hundreds – the app is likely to get a warm reception. Some details: The Skype for iPad software is free, and clocks in at about 16 MBs. You can use either a 3G or a Wi-Fi connection to call both landlines and cellphones, or to chat with other iPad and desktop users.

    So how does the iPad version of Skype stack up? Well, over at Venture Beat, Sean Ludwig takes a spin on the new app, and likes what he sees, mostly. He found that the program occasionally seizes up when a user tries to switch between the contracts list and other options; there was also some lag time on new contact requests. But resolution! Let's talk about that resolution. The video quality is very good, Ludwig writes – even better than FaceTime.

    "In the most important category of video quality, Skype slaughters FaceTime," Ludwig argues. "Skype allows up to 720p (1280×720) resolution at up to 30 FPS across its various platforms. FaceTime for the iPad and iPhone only allows 320×240 resolution at 10 FPS, while FaceTime for the Mac allows 720p. [A colleague] and I briefly tested FaceTime after using Skype for iPad and noticed a dramatic reduction in video quality."

    Horizons readers will remember that Skype, which first launched in 2003 – and has slowly been scooping up users ever since – was purchased in May by Microsoft. The sale price? A $8.5 billion. At the time, reps for both companies said Microsoft will get full access to Skype's range of desktop and mobile apps; in exchange, Microsoft will use Skype to help power in-house products such as the Xbox 360 and the fleet of Windows phones.

    Apple threw open the doors of its iCloud beta Monday afternoon and in doing so finally revealed its storage pricing scheme. In addition to the 5 gigabytes of free storage the service comes with, users can purchase 10 additional GBs for $20.00 per year, 20 additional GBs for $40.00 per year and 50 additional GBs for $100.00 per year.
