Owners of the follow devices can now use the new redsn0w software to Jailbreak (or PwnageTool to unlock) their iDevices for app freedom:
Those with the iPad 2 must wait for a different exploit to be used. According to the Dev-Team, "The reason the untether won’t work as-is on the iPad2 is that it requires a bootrom or iBoot-level exploit to install, and the iPad2 is not susceptible to either the limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits."
Those who rely on the ultrasn0w baseband unlocking (to use Alternative GSM wireless carriers) solution are advised to hold off on updating and jailbreaking, as the software required for the unlock isn't quite ready yet. For everyone else though, this is the way out of Apple's walled garden.
I performed the redsn0w jailbreak process to my iPad 1 last night. The process is simple. It requires an additional download than the previously used Greenpoi0n Jailbreak solution I used. Redsn0w requires that the 4.3.1 iswp file be downloaded in addition to the jailbreak software. Take a look at the instructions below before attempting.
If your iPad is already Jailbroken, make sure you download, install and use the free AptBackup app, from the Cydia store, to backup your Cydia apps before doing the jailbreak process. Once you jailbreak your 4.3.1 iPad, simply reinstall the AptBackup app again and click the restore button and all your Cydia apps are reloaded automatically. Make sure you check out my list of the best Cydia apps.
Here are some instructions on how to jailbreak your iPad 1 on the iOS 4.3.1 firmware using RedSn0w for Mac and Windows.
