I just downloaded the first podcast of my life, the first episode of Freakonomics, and it seemed to download fine, directly to my iPad. However, now I can't find it! I go to iPod and it shows no Podcasts, and it says both "Syncing" as we as "Cancelling Sync". What would it be syncing (I'm on 3G and WiFi at home), and where is the downloaded Podcast?

Where does my Downloaded Podcast Go on the iPad?

It sounds like you downloaded directly from the iPad via the iTunes app. If the Podcast was indeed downloaded, it would be in the iPod app under Podcasts in the Library on the left menu, period. By default the library is on Music, so you have to click the word Podcast on left. If it is not there, it never downloaded completely.
Your comment about syncing and canceling is confusing to me. If you successfully download directly to the iPad, it will copy or sync the podcast to the computer on the next sync. Try again and see if the results are as in my pics below.
The attached item was designed on my iPad using Moxier Collage — the fun app for creating and sharing eCards, photo collages, storyboards, ideas, and more!
