iPad v. Desktop

My one-month-old iPad is gradually taking over many of the tasks which were previously the domain of my desktop. I now use it for on-line banking, email, reading my daily newspaper, servicing my Yahoo Forum. However, the last item is a bit of a problem - there are certain things which I need to do with the Forum which I find need to still be done on the desktop. For instance, I cannot change the photo/illustration on the Home Page, as I cannot browse the photos on my iPad from within the Yahoo Forum. I find that I can't playback mp3 files or import .pdf files. However, the biggest drawback on my iPad is the lack of a really workable printing function. I can't understand why my state-of-the-art Epson wi-fi printer can only handle photos (via Epson iPrint) and why AirPrint is limited to a handful of HP printers. Why doesn't Pages respond to my Epson?

Mike,

There will always be a few things that have to be done on the desktop; however, it doesn't have to mean that you have sit at the desktop.  You can use Logmein Ignition ($29.99) or TeamViewer (free) to allow access to your desktop from the iPad. There are other apps if you and the desktop are connected to the same WiFi network, but these two allow remote access even if you are outside your home or work network.  I use Logmein because I have used it for many many years, I already have all of my computers setup for it, and I bought before I knew about TeamViewer.  These will allow you to do those things, that have to be done from the desktop, from the iPad without leaving the couch or bed.

Regarding the mp3 and PDF issue, I need more information. The iPad clearly supports both formats, so I need to know how you are trying to access them and what is happening. I access both form types from email messages, the web via Safari and my directly loading them to the iPad from iTunes and wirelessly.

I am not a big printing person, so I have not upgraded to 4.2.x (plus it is not Jailbroken yet) to get the AirPrint features. I have a 3rd party Printing app, but never use it; it now utilizes AirPrint, but allows a client to exist on the desktop that handles the print functions.

Take a look and read the reviews on these two apps and see if they might help.
